Dougie those 2 holes in top of the spool housing correspond to a tool that had 2 spikes 1 released it the other was just for guiding spike.
Find a needle that matches the diameter (close fit)of a hole and cut of the sharp point , see which side you can depress down and the other side shouldn’t ...

Looks similar to the handle nut on a shimano TLD.
