Meeting Tuesday 7 June 2022

Post by Tony Ong » Fri May 13, 2022 9:36 am

Hi all
Our next meeting is our yearly tackle auction. This is one of our major fund raising events for the year. 10% of all sales will go towards the club, so please take this into consideration when setting your reserves.
We've managed to secure the services of Gavin for another entertaining night as auctioneer.
Cash payments on the night will always be a great help to settle purchases, however, we do have card facilities, if there is something you have an eye on. For the sellers, please be prepared that it may take a few days to get money transferred into your accounts if there is not enough cash on hand on the night.
If you have any high end rods or reels, maybe list on this post so that it will give some people a heads up for the evening. Please try and keep items related to fly fishing.
We'll have the doors open early so that sellers can log their items, and prospective bargain hunters can have a look at items on offer.
Hope to see you there.

For the prospective buyers at this auction… BUYERS BEWARE.

There is no recourse if you buy something here and it is faulty or has an incorrect description. In fact you have less recourse than if you buy through EBay or Gumtree.

I would have thought that you could place some trust in fellow club members – but this is not always the case…

I was successful last year in bidding for a pair of Simms ‘Gore-tex’ waders last year. Got them for a good price. Only when I got home did I discover they were not Gore-tex as advertised. Ah well, I thought – still an OK price for a good pair of waders. Problem was that the first time they were used, they leaked badly. Not just one or two spots - but the seams were coming apart all over the waders. They are totally unusable. The fact that they were not Gore-tex and were falling apart would have been well known by the club member who sold them.

I could be totally unscrupulous and put them up for auction this time to get my money back – but I do have higher integrity. Some might say I should have been more careful and that it’s all my fault. Yes, you’re probably right. But I did have some faith in fellow members. I know better next time. I don’t expect to get a warranty with an item, but sellers should describe the item correctly and its condition to the best of their knowledge.

So just a warning to bidders. You cannot trust some club members. That’s a pity but it seems to be the world in which we live.

Remember – BUYERS BEWARE. Inspect what you are going to bid for carefully and don’t get caught up in the ‘excitement’ of the auction.

Hi Simon.
I remember you bidding on those waders last year.
Are you sure it was a club member ?
I didn't recognise the seller at all , never seen before that night.
Or since.

Yes it was. Not too sure if he is now. But this message is more of a warning to other members - not about my situation.

Personally I would think that non members should not be able to sell via this auction. I'd be surprised if it was allowed in the past.
