They're here

Post by Tony Ong » Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:50 am

After a long wait, there were a couple of new arrivals last week. Boats are Key West 176CC. The blue one is Arnold's and the white is mine. Boats were ordered from Distinctive Boat Imports, who are up in Wangara. I've got to say that it was a pleasure dealing with Monika and Regan through the whole process.
The plan is to get them wet on the weekend, regardless of the weather. Will get more pics up as I get them. :)

Hi Tony,

Saw you on the river on Sunday. I was on a mates 26ft savage with controls up top, that's where we were sitting. It was you and I think Steve heading down river. We went past each other about mid river out on melville water.
Saw the Keywest name on the side and straight away knew who it was.

How does the new boat go? If you went out of the harbour and headed south you'd get a good idea of how it would handle the rough windy chop. We went out for a quick troll for tailor and only found herring around the bent pin reef. We'd spent the night at mosman soaking a bait for mulloway. Lots of bait balls on the sounder in amongst the moorings with very small tailor on them, maybe something else deeper but we didn't see them.

My mate has only just got his boat sorted after a new engine swap from last year. He's finally happy with it.

So how was your first sea trial? What size engine you got?
Can you give us a quick run down on your set up.

Cheers,
Sami.

G'day Sami. Yeah, that was Steve and me out on Sunday.
The boat went well. Didn't sink when we put her in the drink. Motor turned over first crank. Went forward faster than backwards. All's good. :D
Still getting used to the boat, but real happy with how she went. Just getting the motor run in so that I can get the first service organized. I've got the 90hp Suzuki on the back. Was worried that it may have been a little underpowered, but after Sunday, its feels just about right. The motor is a bit louder than my old motor, but then, it's almost double the hp.
Fitted a HDS10 with structure scan, so spent a fair bit of time playing around with the unit to get familiar with how it works. It's a pretty impressive bit of technology. I can see that it's going to be a steep learning curve to get the best out of the unit. Couldn't wait for the HDS touch screen, as they are just becoming available now.
We probably got half way to stragglers just to see how she would go in the chop. All I can say is no more tinny rrr's. :D Trim tabs were part of the package and it was impressive how well they worked.
Only down side was we didn't manage to get much in the way of fish. Must have been too perfect a day. All that technology and I probably catch more wading. :D

Good stuff Tony.
It definately looked like the boat was travelling nicely.

I've got a DSI 5 for my hobbie and the pictures it gives back are just unreal. I finally think I understand how to read the unit.
Last time I used it was down at drakes brook weir ( south end of waroona ) and square wire fences running under water came out just as if you were looking at it up on land, from the side. Balls of blotches or shapes turned out to be 6 to 8cm redfin perch. I could see the school of fish follow my jig to the bottom and then come up every time I hooked a fish.
It was good training as to what I was seeing and understanding the readings. Side scan would help even more.

The only thing I don't like with this sounder is the menu based adjustments. Some programable buttons would be good.
My mate has a big old colour furuno sounder. Like a small TV. Pixels are quite big but five of the most useful adjustments are dials. So quick and easy to tweak settings.

Sami.
