Salmon

Post by Jon Hammond » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:35 pm

Well lads the Salmon are well and truly down Dunsborough way. Drove down for the day yesterday and had an epic 3 hour session in Bunkers Bay - landed so many fish we lost count! Unfortunately being 100m off the beach with surf breaking I didn't have any chance getting one on fly (I had my 9wt ready to go but it just wasn't going to happen). The 3 boats in the bay were having a blast - would've killed it with the fly rod having that access!!!

It's pretty early to be getting them down there and the water temps are cooling so we're in with a chance of them heading up Perth way - fingers crossed!

Nice one Jon.

Dave, I had the same thought. After 3 or 4 years without a decent Salmon run on the west coast, and with fishing reports all over social media these days and a decent weather forecast I reckon it could be crazy down there this weekend! :)

Imagine if the pros were still netting there too

Yea I'd stay away during the busy times - there were 4 or 5 boats down there when we were, and thank god they were doing the right thing and not driving the school away/down (I assume they were locals/had some idea of what was going on rather than crazy Perth punters with Salmon Fever :D). Though by looking at how close they were together I'm sure there were some classic tangles going on! Was much better on the beach with just a few of us, though unfortunately not able to get em on fly.

If might do another day trip down during the week next week then forget about it over the school hols/Easter.

I used to say it was about a week (or less) between Dusborough and Rottnest. Considering there have been a few reports from the previous week, there is a reasonable chance they are about to hit Perth (or at least West End 'cause they are usually there before the Perth Coast).

I'm probably heading to Rottnest on Saturday - anyone else going? It would be good to have a couple of boats to cover more ground to find a school.

If no salmon then Macks should be a good option

Let me know so we can make sure we are on the same radio channel.

Hi Simon,

I will probably be around somewhere if the weather forecast holds up...what channel do you want to use?

Dave.

Smart arse! (but I can't deny it) It's only been 7 months!

If it still looks good weather I'm going to launch at Fremantle. Closer to other spots that are likely to have Macks plus I think early season Salmon go to the south side first. I'll probably be getting to Freo at about 6am.

What about 77 for the radio?
