
I normally chase them on my kayak. They can be in close to shore sometimes but most of the time that I was on them last season, shore bashing would not have been an option.
They seemed to want quite large flies, and even if they took smaller flies, they tended to work their way off because the hooks weren't big enough. 2/0 SL12S minimum. Generally deceivers or clousers, and from the yak in 10m of water, a sinking line to get the fly into the zone.
Having said that, the times when they were in close, they were very close. A floating or intermediate tip line would have worked just fine.
