The Redington Behemoth looks like a nice bit of kit too. Up to 30lb of drag in the 11-12 model & $129 US.

I think it's $109US for the 7-8 & 9-10.

There's plenty more decent mid priced rods out there for under $500 than just TFO too.

Redington, St Croix, even sage have some cheaper offerings.

With the species you are chasing the reel does a bit more than hold line. Line capacity, drag and retrieval rate becomes important among other things. The harfin is one of the good ones, I was just suggesting look at a mid priced option. Second hand is a good option for reels too.

If it isn't a rush job take your time and handle, cast and fish different as many options as you can. Casting day in December, field days, club meetings all good ways to try before you buy. Just ask Tony, Dave, Graeme and a few others to bring I there 8-12weight reels to the next meeting. I'm sure there would be enough to oggle over

Have fun and find something that takes your fancy.

Too true Adam! I ogle over mine all the time ... When Tony, Steve and Dave pull their reels out, I am delirious with over-ogling! :D

Nic, I would ask yourself what you are mostly going to be using the rod for. Is it mostly boat or shore based fishing that you are going to do. If you don't have a boat now, how long before you purchase one, and be realistic about it.
I would go for a 9wt if it's mostly shore based, and a 10 if the boat purchase is in the immediate future. As you are just starting out, look for something that has a slightly slower action. It will be more forgiving than fast action rods. Have a look at the different forums for second hand rods. As this is your first rod, I would stick to a 9 foot rod. In the long term, it will be more versatile. By all means, pick up something like the mini mag as a second rod or backup.
As suggested by a few of the other guys, have a cast of as many different rods you can get your hands on. Only you can say what you prefer, and a lot of that will be dictated by your budget restraints. We have a casting day end of October, and there's always a heap of rods and reels to try out. We're also planning to run some casting tuition on the day.
With reels, I'm with Adam. The Harfins are awesome, and it's a reel that will last you a lifetime. However, as you have set yourself a budget, I would look at spending more on the rod purchase, and spend less on the reel. Don't skimp on the fly line. There are lots of lines on the market, and plenty of manufacturers. I pretty much stick to Rio and Scientific Anglers lines. Have had mixed results with other brands of fly lines.
Lastly, get in touch with Graeme and book into the beginners casting day with Peter Morse. Yes, it's not cheap, but it will speed up your learning process and set you in the right direction.
