8 & 10WT FLY ROD OPTIONS

Hi guys,

I walked into the Garage yesterday to find the tip of my 10WT snapped off somehow (I suspect the Budgie ) so now in the market for a new one. Looking for opinions on a fast action 10WT up to $300max to replace it.

Alternatively I may look at getting an 8WT fast action that would allow me to cast big flies and punch into the wind. Not sure what options I have here either for here.

Anyone have any good suggestions or have a rod similar to this that I could get a cast out of before buying?

My reply? I really like the 8-10 TFO MiniMag. Casts a mile in a boat and is really good for yak fishing. You're welcome to have a cast of one of mine, and I can even lend you one for a week or so.

Innovator HLS 2 are very good but mid $300'S, TFO BVK are about the same, fast, the advantage is that next time you snap the tip they will replace it for $55, other than that I can check the Temple Fork catalogue for you, i'm sure there would be a model that would fit the price range and would still come with the $55 section replacement fee. Will try to remember to check it out tomorrow for you, in fact i' ll e-mail myself so i don't forget

I've checked the TFO Range, Bluewater can get you the mini Mag 8-10 that Greaeme speaks of for $349 ( less 10% memeber discount ), the TFO Lefty Kreh Signiature II Series for $239 less discount or the Clouser series for $309 less discount. Hope this help

Great, thanks for looking into all that for me Rohan. The 10WT I had was a cheap rod I got off ebay last year getting back into fly fishing. It was too soft really and I never really liked it. So looking at upping the budget a bit now seeing as I have tested some great rods at the field day, I now know the difference in Quality rod.

By the time the salmon are here, I'll have both 10wt minimags rigged all the time and you won't get a chance to borrow one of them. Better have a play with it before then so you can order one in before the salmon arrive (if you like it.)

They label it as an 8-10wt rod, but it's a 10wt.

(I do have the 6-8 version too, and it's an 8wt, way too much rod to be used as a 6wt.)

Starting to think about this a bit more now, I reckon I would fish an 8WT more than a 10WT so I might just get a better 8WT first, fast action as well and then get the 10WT in time for Boneheads.

Any recommendations for 8WT or am I looking at the same rods again?

One of the best 8wt ever made was the loomis cross current GLX, you could probably find one for around $300 second hand these days. Having said that there are lots of quality 8wt rods in the mid price range these days

You might get lucky and find a second hand scott s4s around the traps too- awesome quality rod, that casts like a dream. I cant say enough good things about the one I picked up.
