Shooting heads with old line bodies?

Post by Jon Hammond » Mon Feb 06, 2012 8:11 pm

Hi all - just wondering who has experience in making shooting heads using an old fly line body as the running line? I have an old Rio Tarpon 9wt line in which the front section has been chewed up. I also have some LC13. Is it simply a case of working out what length of LC13 I need for my 9wt rod and putting loops on it and loop to looping it to the running line?

Pretty much summed it up there Jon. Depending on what 9wt, somewhere between 27 - 30 feet of LC13. It's pretty subjective as to how much you need. Best way is to go out to a park and have a cast. Take a little off the LC13 at a time till it feels right to you.

Well since its for a shooting head, and you are putting LC13 on it and should be two weights up,
not my invention but the world knows why, so that's 330gns of LC13, which is 25.3 feet and that's
without adding a tapered leader, which should be about 6 odd feet.
I would put about 28 feet on it and chop it is necessary but it depends how to chucks.
But IHMO you should put a monic 50lb GsP running line on there and forget the rubbish runner off
the other dead thing. Its really not worth bothering about. Just blow the bugle as it hits the bin.
A hunk of LC13 and a 50lb 100' monic GsP runner will go like a rocket without much effort.
