Casting Day Sunday 26 October 2014
Re: Casting Day Sunday 26 October 2014
Hi Dale. It's great to hear feedback from these sort of days. I'm glad that you got something out of it.
The day was well attended, and many thanks to all the guys who made it down. The day started off with scattered showers and light winds. By the end of the afternoon, it was blowing 15 to 18 knots, making it perfect for learning how to handle casting in the wind.
A few Sage Salts (7,9, & 12) made it down to the day, and it was great to be able to put line through them. As always, there were a few surprises. Graeme had a short 10wt Epic fibreglass rod that cast like a cut snake. Matt had an old school fibreglass 6wt had the dimensions of a modern day 12wt. Also a sweet casting rod.
We had a distance casting competition with an Eagle Claw 4/5 weight fibreglass rod. For a line, we did something different with 26 feet Rio T8, attached to a mono running line. Line control was the aim of this exercise, as well as introducing something different to what we normally fish and cast with. Participants could have as many casts as they liked, and it looked like it was busy till the wind started picking up. This made thing tricky, as you had to time your cast between gusts, otherwise, the wind would blow the line backwards. Longest cast went to Eric at 97 feet. Prize was the Eagle Claw rod. Well done Eric.
We held two casting days this year, and they have been well received. We'll look at running more of these next year.

Tony,
thanks for showing young Cam how to wield the long wand yesterday. By the end of the session he was throwing wonderful loops and he woke up this morning hungry for more!! Apparently it was his 'news item' at school this morning!
Yesterday will go down as the day he 'officially' learnt to fly cast - and so starts the journey........it might also have given me another excuse to buy more gear
cheers
Gav

My pleasure Gav. If only everyone was as easy as Cam to show what to do. Picked up what he needed to do and went ahead during the day.
Need to get him out on the water and get a taste of hooking fish.
