Matt, currently tying up some articulated poppers. Picked up some pre shaped heads from Flyworld. Worked a treat on the Salmon. Will take some pics and post tomorrow.
Worth tying some crease flies as well.

Hi Matt
Don't go to strong with flash for flats style flies. For flies that you're fishing deeper with (more than a couple of meters), a little flash helps.

Yeah, the popper worked a treat on Salmon.
We all asked the same questions when we started out Matt.
Really depends on what sort of flash you're using. ie Krystal Flash vs Flashabou. Krystal Flash doesn't throw out as much light as Flashabou (in my opinion), so you can afford to use more Krystal Flash before it becomes too loud. Sometimes this is useful when you want more bulk in a fly.
For a flats fly, you could probably use up to 12 strands of Krystal flash. If you used 12 strands of Flashabou on the same fly, the fish are going to need some decent sunnies, with the disco ball that you are throwing into their face.
Other flash material react differently again, so a lot of it is trial and error. If you tie on too much flash, you can always trim some of it out.

Yeh nice one on the surface fly should be good up in exmouth.
Ill just tie up a variety of clousers and decievers with some surface flys.
Will take up the vise incase i need too ty up something that is working.
Is it suicide not too take crab patterns up there ?? as i have just been focusing on
clousers and getting decievers right. But yeh cheers for all the info a big help...cant wait not long now

No, it's no crime. Crabs are good to have, but not essential for any species that most people commonly target. My (only) permit was caught with a Clouser-style fly designed to look somewhat shrimpish. I'll happily throw that fly at permit again, but it would also be appropriate for a queenie or golden.

I personally think it's more important to imitate behaviour than form in many cases. If the fly acts like food, it'll probably get eaten.

queenies eat anything.. I found out the hardway on the weekend.. I had a brand new crabfly just sitting on the bottom of the water in dampier, casting at what I thought potentially could of been a blue bastard.. and it was eaten by a bloody queenie..
