Hi everyone,

Anyone know if the flathead are around in any decent numbers at the moment? I've got a few spare hours early on Saturday morning and was thinking about hitting Point Roe to chase a few..

Whilst I'm on the topic of flathead what have you found to be the best conditions for them? Incoming tide? out-going tide? on the flats? drop offs? low light conditions... blah blah.. You get what i'm on about..

Anyway cheers guys and i look forward to your replies..

Mcgoo

What time of day would work and what type of flies would you use to target flatties :?:

Any fly that stays close to the bottom like Clousers, Squimps and Charlies will work on flatties. They can be caught throughout the day but usually my best results were in the early mornings till 9:00am and from 4:00pm till dark. The main thing to remember is to keep the fly close to the bottom. Also remember they like to ambush there prey so fish areas that provide cover like big rocks on sand flats, drop-offs and around weed patches.

Me and Jacques will be heading out on Sunday morning to try and catch a few. Just PM me if you wanna tag along.

I got a few there a few weeks ago so with the water getting warmer there are bound to be more around now. Not sure about the weed over there at the moment though.

Thanks for the info and the invite - sadly I have to work on Sunday (and Saturday and Monday and Tuesday) to keep the WA economy going  . But I am definetely going to try next time I'm back in Perth.

G'day Ryan

I fished the previous sunday with Andre and Jacques down in east freo with no luck, however I tried around the Bicton bars to Black well reach area this morning and picked up a couple of average sized flatties and a small flounder.
The tide was on the turn to incoming and I fished the fringes of dropoffs onto the flats. Lucky fly was a tan charlie with pink crystal flash.

Hope this helps ......

Picked up 3 very nice fish by 7.30 on Sunday morning. 2 of them were 50cm plus and one about 35. The two biggies both looked like they were full of roe. Looks like it could be a very good summer for flathead.

No takes on pink and white for me, but yellow/white/flash clouser did the trick.
