Hi guys, John O here-new member. I am wanting to get to the field day 13 March Mindarie /Yanchep. I am slowly compiling some new gear together after many years absence from fishing. my 5/6 wt rod will be too small for the day. I will need a new rod . Any suggestions on size and weight? i.e will a 9 ft 8wt salt do the job? also type of leaders and tippets? cheers John

G'day John,
An 8wt should do the trick for you. That's a pretty good all-rounder. If its an 8wt Sage Salt, you'll have a few guys drooling.
Leaders are a bit of a "personal preference" thing. The things I use are probably too complex for most people but I'm a bit anal on them. The easiest thing to do is to buy a spool each of 40lb, 30lb and 20lb leader in fluorocarbon or nylon and make your own leaders from them (1.2m of 40, 0.6m of 30 and 0.6m of 20 joined with surgeons knots). Add a lighter tippet if you think it's required.
Cheers,
Graeme

I use a 6wt for most things around perth.
An 8 or 9 would carry bigger flies & deal with wind a lot better though.
That being said I'll be taking a 7wt & a 9wt with me that day.
I have a 8/9 rod/line backup as a spare you can borrow for the day if you don't want to lash out on new stuff.
You may need a reel though.
