Saltwater Flyrodders

Good day all
Have got a spot at Boneheads so super excited, but that means more gear. I'll be fishing from shore and perhaps a kayak and wanted to know what weight rod/ reel I should get. I've got a 6 and an 8 weight rod/reel but guessing I'll need something bigger for there. Should I be looking at a 9 or 10 weight? I'll be using it around metro waters too. Any suggestions welcomed

I would suggest a 10wt, not much you can't do with the 8wt that you can with the 9wt. I use a 9wt and 11wt for my flats fishing up there.

Thanks Spencer, I thought as much but wanted confirmation being new to salt water fly fishing. I'll go 10 weight which I can use for salmon here too.

10wt is my goto for local fishing and for Exmouth. Locally, salmon and snapper, Exmouth - everything!

Thanks Graeme, will definitely go 10 then. Might just buy a 9 later on to have the options.....

I will be bringing two 8WT's and a 10WT. Probably mainly use the 8WT unless I start spotting big fish then I will swap over. Also heading up with the yak so I can cover more ground and get out and fish a few areas if I come across fish.

I will have a 7, 9 and 10 wt with only 1 reel per rod so got to be careful on the lines I choose.

For the trip like Dee looking at using the Hobie Kayak to get around.

For the 7 wt I have a floating line with singing tip and a full sinking line and shooting head.

For the 9 wt I have an intermediate line only.

For the 10 wt starting with an intermediate and go from there.

Just after ideas on what people think I need to bring.

Optimum shore rod is 9wt, boat its 10wt, sounds like they are close but there is a massive difference between the weights. You could go an 8 and a 10, but then i like to use the 9 for light boat stuff, and the 8 is a bit light for that, which is only really perfect for Bones and small trevs, dart etc The 9 is just as much fun. Then you could add something heavier if you really want to get serious but unless your specifically targeting big GT's , Sailies or Marlin, you probably wont use it.

Probably Intermediate & Floating lines really Rohan is it if your off yaks and shore based? I am expecting lots of flats etc there, with not much depth of water but I could be wrong?!

Definitely need a sinking line even if you are only fishing from shore. Pilgramuna has a strong current and only a sinking line will get you down to the fish. Out of the kayak a sinking line gets the fly in front of the fish quickly. A must if you see bones☺
