Exploration day trips

Post by Andre Rossouw » Wed May 08, 2013 9:43 am

=================
Update

Seeing as the Jurien Bay field day may take place on either the weekend of the 8th or the weekend of the 15th and we have a casting day on the 23rd of June, we might have to move the first exploration trip to July.

Still some time to think of locations and scout some areas.

=================

Hi guys

Seeing as I'm fairly new to Australia and very keen on exploring new fishing locations I thought this will be a great opportunity to get fellow fly fishermen involved.

The focus of these exploration day trips are to find new places to fish. Most of these trips will be land based so anyone can join in. As Gavin said last night: "It will get you out of your comfort zone". Monthly reports will be given at club meetings and maybe even a few Perter Walker nominations.

We will organize the first trip to be after the June field day.
Feel free to make suggestions on locations.

Tight lines.
Andre

Sounds like a great idea Andre. I'll try to come on a few of them, but I really like my comfort zone (and the kayak I fish from in it ... :) )

Count me in.
The upper Swan would be an interesting one Andre. There's lots of overgrown banks and private properties to skirt around, but there are patches here and there that are fishable on fly. Water is usually tannin stained, and as such, fish are a rich gold colour. A lot easier from boat, but would be more interesting shore based. Good place to start would be Fish Market Reserve and work up river. I'm sure there's a few guys that have fished this area, and would be great to get some info from them.
Couple of other options that would be feasible on the right day would be some of the beach fishing spots. Think Yanchep reef and further North. Rohan is a wealth of information from his beach fishing days. Will have to pick the days with low swell and light winds(light easterlies would be perfect), so this one will need short term planning. There's also beaches south of Mandurah that are well worth a look at. This is probably more a summer proposition. Tide is generally low in the mornings in summer as well. We do get some fantastic winter days, so this is not totally out of the question.

I think we are long over due for one. 2013 was a busy year for some of us.

So finally here is the first exploration trip:
- Sunday the 17th of November 2013 at 6:00am till 11:00am
- Rockingham foreshore at the Victoria Street parking lot ( http://bit.ly/19Ul94c )
- Fishing the foreshore flats for big whiting and blue spotted flatheads

We will meet at the parking lot. Should be a fun day.
