Weipa June 2012

Post by Tony Ong » Mon Jun 25, 2012 10:20 am

Just back from a couple of glorious weeks in Weipa fishing with Alan 'Fish' Philliskirk. Bellie and I were lucky enough to be invited over a few days earlier and have a couple of extra days with Fish before the actual charter started. Nathan, Rog, Steve, and Martin joined us for the second week.
We left Perth in the midst of the storms that hit a couple of weeks ago, to arrive in Ground Hog Day Weipa. 19-28 degrees every day, 3-10 knots forecasted winds. Needless to say, it's been a rude shock getting back into Perth and scrambling for a jumper.
According to Fish, he's had just about the worst season of fishing that he can remember up there. Weather patterns has been unusual. Lot's of westerly winds which produces an onshore swell. This affects fishing along the beaches as it stirrs up the water, making it milky and tough to sight fish. The large bull sharks have also been a serious problem out there this year. We had many fish taken by them, and it was usually a case of getting a fish or two before the sharks wised up, then moving on to do something else. Saying that, we may have managed to catch a fish or two between the six of us.
Pics to follow.
