First sambo on fly :)

Post by MattGoodall » Mon Oct 27, 2014 9:34 pm

Had an epic day on the water with today.

First spot hooked something decent and hook pulled after 10 secs. guttered as ill never know what it was but that it the fun
of dropping flys down deep into some reef :)

Second spot got some cubes going and after 15 mins Got my first bonito on fly, was awesome to see some backing and hit it hard :). Than 10 mins later hooked into something solid just off the bottom that headed for antartica. After some tense moments pull starting the engine while holding my rod and watching my line, my mate pulling anchor than we gave chase.

Long story short 50 mins later a 16kg sambo came to the surface. Around the 30 min mark i was going to go harder but leader would have definitely popped surprised it didn't. To say i was stoked is an underestimate. especially having only 20lb pound tippet :)
Amazing day first time out a bit in the new boat good way to get things started for it :)

ps, who even fishes for bream :)

Thanks guys

So went out again yesterday to try and find some more couldn't find any tuna so went back to old faithful and started the chum

Nothing happened for about 45mins than a school of bonito came into the trail and got an eat from one was great fun :)

20 mins later a pack of solid yellowtail king and sambos came into the trail we were feeding on the cubes so we kept cubing hard. They were all 20kg plus fish could see them in the 10m crystal clear and we're coming up with a metre or 2 of the surface.
Anyways after a lot of follows I let one sink down a bit further before lame hard snappy retrieve and bang on felt like it was snagged. Solid weight did nothing than solid head shakes and off it went :) prob should have given chase straight away but told my mate to get his fly in there. 2nd cast 2m from surface and one swam up gracefully ate the fly and was on double hook up. Next minute clearing the line knot in the leader Tryed to get it out fish ran 2nd last guide leader popped dam :)

Mean while I have lost about 300m of backing and had about 200 left. He tossed a fly out again as he was pulling anchor next minute we here a splash look back there goes the 700 buck combo down into the depths attached to a solid fish :) than just after that mine rubbed the leader on the reef and I was off. Laugh or cry :) it was an epic day to see solid fish like that and see the eats was something that will be engrained in my mind for a long time :)

Looking into setting up a quick release anchor line on a float that should do the trick :)
