New to Perth
New to Perth
Hi All. Im new to Australia and the only Fly fishing I have done is back home in the UK for trout, sea trout, salmon and the like. I am living in the Kwinana area at the moment. Im just wondering what are my options for areas to fish and what type of fish would I be targeting, what flies to use that sort of thing. I guessing there will be a lot of different answers to this post but I could do with getting the ball rolling. Ive always fancied a bit of saltwater fly fishing and if there is some good spots for river and lake fluff chucking too thats great. thanks
Re: New to Perth
G'day Dayle,
Welcome to Perth and to SW fly fishing. Unfortunately, the opportunities for fresh water fishing are rare in the Perth area, but there are plenty of SW options. The lakes don't have fish and the fish in the local rivers are mainly in their estuaries.
The local beaches near Kwinana hold tailor, WA Salmon, WA Herring and sand whiting (plus probably Giant Herring). Those would be the easiest targets for you to get to.
If you travel a bit, your options widen. Southern Black Bream are found in the estuaries of the local rivers and sand whiting on poppers are fun in the Peel Inlet near Mandurah.
For bigger targets, try mulloway in the Swan and Canning rivers.
If you have a boat or kayak, your options for bigger fish are much greater. Plenty of fish in the ocean ....
The best way to get info is to come along to the next club meeting. It's on this Tuesday night at the rowing club near Canning Bridge. (Details are elsewhere on the site.)
Cheers,
Graeme
