Converting from fresh to saltwater

Post by Greg Puchert » Sat Mar 03, 2012 7:51 am

Hi,

I'm new to Perth, and fairly new to fly fishing. The fly fishing I have done is mostly for bass and some trout fishing.

Any tips please on converting to salt water, gear & rod weights etc, especially for fishing the Swan River?

Where are the favored spots on the Swan River for fly fishing? Otherwise, are there local dams stocked with bass?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Greg

6 weight is a good start I reckon for fishing around perth.

If you want to go offshore (boat) or do some rock type stuff you might want to ramp up to a 9 or 8 but the 6 is a good every day in the river dealie.

take care of your gear after being in the salt- corrosion is a big issue especially when it's hot.

Lower reaches of the river are pretty good for a cast. You're better off trying to find flats areas with not too much boat traffic zipping past as this stirs up the water & puts off the fish.

Thanks for the advice Mat! I will be getting a 8/9wt outfit soon and try some beach fishing too!

Anybody sell flies privately?

If you are going to fish beaches and local river flats, use Platypus Lo Stretch mono, backing, stay away from braid
as the beaches and flats have sand grit which fools around with braided lines. Just a thought.

There are a couple of dams fitted with bass, or at least that's my information from times past.
But I don't think they would be open slather. I do know of a couple of dame with funny fish residents,
how you get in there is a bit dubious.
