Salmon
Re: Salmon
A big school of Salmon went through the North Mole this morning according to a guy fishing there, lots of Bonito too, they were still busting up out of range this afternoon.

Thanks Tony, I'll give it a shot! May get into this yak fly fishing thing as well sometime!Tony Ong wrote:Hi Diarmuid. It's possible to chase them from shore. You just need to be in the right place at the right time. Perth and surround beaches get pretty busy in Salmon season. Finding a beach where the fish come into fly range is the challenge. Usually best done on a weekday, or at first light, before the fish have been pushed out further.
Areas worth a try are around Penguin island, Cockburn sound, and Warnbro sound.

Had an Epic session down this way with some Mates off the beach. Skinny water only few fish cruising through. But ended up switching to surface poppers and the eats and boils and chases was just epic. Casting with a surface offering and it getting smashed on the surface while u have sand between ur feet, don't think it gets much better than that

Re: Salmon
Finally managed to get some gear together after my kit was lifted a few weeks back. I will be giving a few land based locations a go this break.
A question for those in the know, my limited experiences with Perth salmon to date has found them to be strangely fussy. Which isn't what I've experienced with the east coast sub species. This early in the run are they picky eaters? or can I just throw a dirty clouser at them?
Weather pending I'm planning on getting out and having an early morning look at a few spots, will start with those already mentioned here, cheers.
Any one interested in joining forces? two sets of eyes and two brains can help to make the learning curve quicker....
Rick.

Hey Rick,
Glad ur back in the game. yeh they can be damed fussy. usually only if they are milling around not in schools though.
Find the schools and u get the competion and should be all good. I have found down this way sometimes they turn away from smaller clousers. So bigger baitfish profiles with weighted bodies do the job well. Found some down here the other day in a skinny gutter in front of a massive sand bank. only a few feet deep. A lot of fun as the cast had to be right and lead them otherwise they would spook. Good luck, doubt any of that made sense haha

Re: Salmon
Finished work early today and shot out for an arvo sesh from woodies. Didnt even get past the main shipping channel and there were salmon busting everywhere. These are very fat fish with most of them spitting out a dozen or so whole pilchards when u get them in the boat. They are very hungry so get out there and get amongst them. Should be a lot of fish caught for the field day this weekend providing the weather stays ok
Re: Salmon
Hi Rick. Early season salmon are usually easy, unless your name is Brian.
Last season was very different from past years, as they stayed around Perth for so long and had the kitchen sink thrown at them. They got very shy towards the end.

Nice one Wade
Tony, you obviously subscribe to the 'treat them mean, keep them keen' philosophy for your deckies

I should have checked here before I went out at dawn for a pre-work session. I could have reached them on the yak from Woodies, I reckon.wade stenhouse wrote:... Didnt even get past the main shipping channel and there were salmon busting everywhere.
(Still no big schools in the Sound at the northern end.)
Rick, I never found them to shy away at all last year. Large clousers that were run deep did the trick every time.
Cheers,
