New 9/10weight combo

Post by Nic » Thu Sep 03, 2015 6:25 pm

Hey guys

Looking at getting a new 9/10 weight combo. Been looking at the Harfin LR110, TFO BVK.
Anyone used a harfin lr110 or TFO BVK? Wanting it for salmon, kingies, tailor, small pelagics and trevs, Mackies and tuna up north.
Cheers fellas

Hey Nic
I don't think you can go wrong with the Harfin by all accounts?
Have a look at the TFO Mangrove and the Ti CrX .
For the species you want to chase these have a better lifting/ casting rating than the BVK ?check TFO 's website
Also a bit cheaper mangrove sells for around 330 and Ti for 350
I haven't had anything to do with any of these rods myself however have been looking at purchasing a 10 weight also and budget issues these seem like good value unless you can pick something up secondhand ?

I'd prob go with a 10# if your chasing bigger fish with it. Comes in handy on the salmon and Giant Herring.

Were is Brad when you need him. He just did the same exercise to a certain extent.

We've used the #9 BVK a lot and it will be up to the task but not the best tool for the job. I've not cast the #10 so don't know how it casts and fights fish. There are a plethora of options I'd be looking at a good 9 or an average 10.

Your question implies you've set a budget for the rod and reel. The Harfin is going to be great but can you change the ratio of what you spend on the rod/reel combo and get a better rod and drop the reel down a bit. Do you have a reel you could use and allocated all the investment to a good/great rod?

I'd put the word out and see if you can't get a few 9s and 10s to try casting before you purchase. The other option is to look out close out series from manufactures that have up'd the marketing blurb this year.

Have fin deciding. Let us know what you settled on and eventually how it performed.

Is there much difference between a 9 and 10?
A few of my mates use 9's and 8's for salmon. Was thinking 9 but I'll look at the 10's
Cheers

Hey Adam
Cheers for your reply. Thinking about it now, your reel is just there to hold line, not much else. I think it would make sense to spend more on rod and line than reel. I don't have a rod as just started fly fishing earlier this year. I'm gonna wait till I get a boat until I buy the 9wt. Can you recommend a good 9wt rod? And how about a cheapish reel?
