Rio GT flyline for a 12wt?

Post by Simon P » Fri Apr 22, 2016 10:15 am

Hi.

Anyone used the Rio GT flyline? It comes in 400, 475 and 500 grain line weights. Any recommendations as to which would work best on a TFO TiCr 12wt rod for fishing flats?

Thanks.

Simon I think on the 12 with a gt fly you will be looking at the 475 as the last size is 550 not 500.

I have the 400 you could try in the park if you wanted.

Someone else might have a 475

Hi Simon,

I've got a 400 grain version of that line. It's OK on an 11, but too light on a 12 in my opinion.

I'd go the 475 grain.

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Simon
Have a look at sink tip lines as well. They're a little more versatile compared to a full floater. Allows you to fish slightly deeper. Also 'keys' popper flies to the water better. Doesn't jump around as much.
Look for one that has 9 foot intermediate front section, with the rest of the line being a floater.

Given that the TiCR is a stiff rod, I'd suggest going with the 500gn line.

A 400 will definitely not be enough - that's what I use on my 10wt MiniMag rods.

What Dave said - I use the 400 grain on my 11 weight, and the 475 grain on my 12 weight - great lines for bare knuckle GT brawling!

Yep the 400 is good on an 11. Tried mine on the 12 at Rompin and its underweight especially for the sort of flies used there.
The 475 is great on a 12. Like the Outbounds I think they are a little short in overall length. 120 feet would be better.
