need some help choosing a 4wt Rod

Hey Guys,

Looking at getting myself a 4wt rod for bream fishing the swan & the likes.. im going to match it up with a lamson litespeed 1.5 I am a bit undersided about what rod choice to make!

what do you guys use for bream?

none really! prob nothing over 700

There's lots of choices available. Chris at Flyworld or Rohan at Bluewater Melville usually have a few to have a look at. If you have your heart set on a 4wt, borrow, beg, or buy a line. That way, you can have a cast of the rod before you make a decision. As long as the rod 'feels' right to you, it's probably the right one. Rio Gold would probably be the pick of lines available.
Don't worry about freshwater fittings, as you will be pushed to find a 4wt with saltwater fittings. A quick rinse after every outing will be sufficient to keep your gear in good nick.
I have a 4 wt Wildfish Cascade for sale. Under $200 and in almost new condition. Let me know if you're interested. Can arrange for you to have a cast before you make up your mind.

I got a an 8'6" Sage One last December and can highly recommend it - probably my favourite rod at the moment.

Might be right around the top end of your budget though...

I'm very happy with the 5wt TFO BVK I've got. (You had a cast with it on the river that day at Mt Henry.) The fittings are salt resistant and it's well within that budget (not even half that - closer to a third …) They get heaps of good reviews online too.

However, I'm not experienced enough to say how it would compare with other rods myself.

it was the 7wt graeme but it was a beauty to cast for a beginner like myself.. I am looking at getting a 7wt combo down the track and the BVK might be on the cards!

Why don't you build your own 4# rod? Go to http://www.mudhole.com for a good four piece blank (the MHX series) and select your cork grip, guides and reel seat - or buy a whole kit for about $130. It is easy and great fun to build a rod and I am sure there are many guys in the club who would assist you. You can also get Thomas & Thomas, Sage, St. Croix and other upmarket blanks if you choose to do so - but they cost substantially more. You only need one roll of thread, an old telephone directory, two bottles of flex coat, small cheap paint brushes, small plastic disposable shot glasses, epoxy, a blade, a pair of scissors, a rat tail file, some masking tape, a power drill, and an apple box – or you can borrow someone’s rod wrapper and finishing motor and you’re set. There are excellent books, YouTube videos and websites to show you how to build a rod. At the price of a kit you can afford to build yourself a rod in every weight class and still have change left.
