This featured today in Recfishwest newsletter.

Is this a regular occurrence, I thought that the bonefish were limited to the Ningaloo area? I wouldn't think they'd be catchable at Kalbarri due to the rough ocean conditions. Flyfishing off the ledges would be interesting to say the least...

I vaguely remember reports of Bonefish as far South as Geraldton.
Also remember when Bonefish at Exmouth and Carnarvon were incidental and largely
unknown.
Hence the original intent of Boneheads.
Given the fishery we now have at Exmouth , 30 odd years ago would have probably been laughed at.
Also remember the days when the whole idea of targeting Black Bream on lures or flies would have been laughed at.

There was a Western Angler article on catching them around Carnarvon on bait in the surf. A while back...

That's probably it - catching them in the surf with bait... Wonder if there are any areas where you could catch them on fly... Not the most friendly coast for shore based wand wavers...

Hi Liam
Areas around Carnarvon with recorded Bonefish captures are camp rock Quobba , blowholes beach Quobba.
In Carnarvon , mouth of the Gascoigne and the now gone prawning jetty.
The old prawning jetty was a bit of a Hotspot , so maybe around there and pelican point.
It's a doable area to wade and fly fish.
Just be mindful I onced fished the inside area of pelican point , waded across a number of small chanels.
On the incoming tide I had to get back and encountered numbers of sharks.

I spoke to the guy at The Kalbarri fishing shop who caught those bones. He was fishing for Mulloway using mullet as bait with a 12 foot surf rod at Wagoe, just south of Kalbarri, big shore break waves. He caught 5 bones in one session and the guy fishing with him also caught a few.

I asked whether they’d be in the Lucky Bay area a little further south (which has a large lagoon area inside a rock bar so better for fly fishing. He hadn’t heard anything but said it’s possible. He was a bit dismissive when I mentioned chasing then on fly.
I didn’t get a chance to try for them myself. Just had to make do with poor mans bonefish in the river.

Thanks for the info Greg - still so much to explore along the coast. I'm sure in the right conditions they'd be catchable off the bricks...
