Hi all,
I’ve fly fished previously in the UK, but now I am planning to get into saltwater fly fishing in WA, just joined the club also.
I have a Greys 9wt rod that I used in the UK for trout and was planning to use this inshore around Perth for snapper/skippy etc from my boat. Would this be suitable and what model reel would be recommended for such fishing?
I would also like to get a lighter rod/reel for use in the Swan/Mandurah for flathead/herring etc. Again recommendations on rod/reel would be appreciated.
Also any advice on where to buy fly gear for the above in Perth.
Cheers,
Michael

Bluewater myaree or fly fishing outfitters over in midvale.
Re: Fly rod and reel recommendations
Hi mate, welcome to the saltwater side. Your Greys 9wt rod will work fine for inshore fishing around Perth. It’s a good setup for snapper, skippy, and similar fish from your boat. Just make sure to use a saltwater reel with a smooth drag. Something like a Lamson Liquid, Orvis Hydros, or Shimano Asquith would be a good match. For lighter fishing in the Swan or Mandurah for flathead and herring, a 6 or 7wt rod with a matching reel will do the job nicely. You can find fly gear at Compleat Angler in Nedlands or Bluewater Tackle in Myaree. Both shops have good gear and helpful staff who know the local spots.
