6wt Outfit

Post by Liam Stephen7 » Tue Dec 04, 2012 6:35 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a 9 or 10 ft 6wt outfit for an up coming trip to New Zealand. I need the lot: rod, reel and line. Price wise preferably no more than $750. Let me know what you's have.

Cheers guys
Liam

Hi Liam
I'm a firm believer in trying a rod before purchase. Some rods just feel better than others, and it's very much down to personal preference. Cast as many different 6 weight possible.
If you're chasing trout, a moderate action rod would probably be better suited. Someone here may have some second hand gear. Otherwise, a visit down to Rohan at Bluewater Melville or Chris at Flyworld will sort you out. Both will be happy for you to try the rod before purchase. A wiggle in the shop just doesn't tell you how it handles with a line through it.
In terms of reels, you can get away with something cheap. It's really only a line storage device, till you hook onto that trophy fish. It's best to wait and match the line to the rod.
A good quality line from Rio or SA is well worth the invesment. Matching the line to the rod is an art. Again, have a chat to Rohan or Chris for some advice, once you get the rod.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the advice. Yes I like to try the rod before I buy. As for lines I really like the Rio Golds so I'll go with one of those for sure. I'm going to go to Flyworld this weekend for a browse.

Thanks again
Liam
