Post by Stephen Winsor » Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:16 am

Hey Guys,

im tying a fair bit atm and ive started tieing some charlies for bream & other smaller species for perth based fishing!

ive tried a different types of wings for my crazy charlies but im interested to see what everyone uses.. ive personally tried calf tail, arctic fox & craft fur

I like the arctic fox.. but I only fish it in the lower reaches of the swan where the blowies arent as thick!

Hello

Although I don't fish with Crazy Charlies much, I use a range of natural hairs and feathers for my estuary flies. I use things like a few different types of goat hair, rabbit fur, fox fur, possum fur, wool, and so on.

They are organic and renewable, and if I lose my flies in the river, they have less problem for the environment.

I don't like to see those plastic bags floating in the river, or eating a fish full of plastic in its belly, so I just want to minimize a risk of me creating the same problem.

I must admit that I do add a couple strands of Krystal Flash on a few certain flies, and my shrimp and crab flies have eyes made out of nylon mono, etc. However, whenever I can, I prefer to use natural materials over synthetic. But then, I fish with organic rods as well....

I don't have problem with blowies because of using flies tied with natural materials.

I do of course catch blowies some time, but over the whole season, I catch more breams and other fish than the number of blowies being caught. Even fishing in the blowfish capital like Mandurah, it is the same.

Unless using buck tails which stinks like man's armpit not being washed for months (for that, I don't tie my flies with buck tails), most of fur patches sold at fly shops are dyed / processed, so they won't smell to attract blowies.

One can say that synthetic is much stronger than natural fibers, so a fly may last longer after being chewed by blowies.

Thanks

Yosuke

Hi Stephen
The materials that you mentioned are all good. I mostly use craft fur and fox for bream charlies. Craft fur is great because of the range of colours that it comes in. I look for good mobility in the material, and usually overdress the fly to compensate for the blowies. Most times, I'm using Mustad Big Game Light hooks in size 6. I'm also particularily fond of the Midge Krystal flash for this size fly.

Hi Guys,
Interesting conversation, thanks for the contributions. Will any one of you please consider posting a couple of photos as examples of your charlies and the different furs you mentioned in your postings?

Thank you kindly

Sam
