Garfish Flies

Post by Lachie » Sun Jul 07, 2013 8:53 pm

Hello,
I went 4wd today at two rocks, i had taken my fly gear along and was hanging out to throw a fly around but it was blowing a gale! Anyway i ended up getting my normal rod out and had a few casts around, managed to hook 3 good sized garfish in a short space of time before we headed off. Im keen to target garfish on fly over these holidays. Anyone else had any luck with garfish on fly? If so what kind of flies were used?

I've had success in exmouth using a floating crab. The crab was made from spun deer hair with an 80's flat top hair cut The garfish were tiddlers tho.... I was wading on the gulf side and spotted the swirls they made on the glassy water surface. I cast the fly towards a swirl and hookup...The size 2 hook worked despite the fact that it looked too big for their little mouth.

Small size 12 nymphs have worked well in the past for me. Been a bit light on the ground the garfish schools metro in the last couple of years. Maybe bring them to you with plenty of burley flavoured with garlic ;)
